The first statement that Jesus makes is that He is one with the Father in all of the Father’s actions. He says this in two ways: negatively and positively. The Son can do nothing by Himself; He can only do what He sees the Father doing. Then Jesus says because whatever the Father does the Son also does. John 5:19. This is a claim to divinity. How this must have angered the religious leaders. Jesus was saying that everything He did the Father did, and vice versa. The conclusion to the whole matter was that Jesus and the Father were in unity with one another! What a truth!
Another truth that the religious leaders could not handle was the fact that the Father and Jesus the Son had been working together in all previous actions. Jesus was turning their minds back to God’s work from the beginning of creation. He claimed to be a part of that work as well. http://ref.ly/Co1.16-18 This is an important point in understanding Who Jesus is. Time did not limit Jesus. Time is for humanity–not Jesus, or the Father. We are to catch a picture of Jesus existing with God the Father and working with God the Father from eternity.
